The work 30 consists of thirty video clips taken over the thirtieth year of my life. Punctuating the division between each video clip is a flashcard with text on it, mimicking the format of silent films. Prosaic comments such as “ Move your feet” and “Do you like cereal?” are interleaved with more nuanced and empathetic messages such as “You are tired”, “Are you o.k.?” and “How are you hungry?’.
Layered on top of these images is an audio track of a news broadcast about US astronomers finding the first direct evidence of dark matter existing in the universe.
Both micro and macroscopic in content, 30 emphasizes the interconnectedness of random experiences, the tenuous threads that constitute our experience as humans, and our inability to ever comprehend the totality of our lives.
